Ael Y Bryn
The vernacular traditional end terrace early Victorian stone built dwelling in Llanychaer has recently been completed. Converted and extended with a juxtaposing gable end two storey extension.
We aimed to maintain the street view and retain/enhance the wonderful character of the host dwelling, and add from the principle elevation a modest and in keeping extension, echoing the fenestrations to that found on the host dwelling.
The gable end, however, allowed us to explore how to best capture the wonderful views down the wooded valley, this was achieved via large apex glazing (non-symmetrical) the first floor bi-fold doors (creating a great Juliet balcony) open up to allow the acoustic treat from the sound of the running river nearby to flow into the first floor open plan kitchen. We felt it important to flip the living arrangements around and move the daytime living areas up to the first floor, as it's this elevated position that unlocks the views.
The garden has been carefully landscaped and will evolve over time to soften and frame the home.
A great project inside the National Parcs and finished to a high standard.
